Welsh Assembly debates Gov't adoption

The Liberal Democrat Aled Roberts has urged the Welsh government to adopt the Charter for British Sustainable Steel to "curb the use of substandard and unsustainable material". Mr Roberts was leading a debate on 25 March on the steel industry, which employs thousands in Wales.

Rocketing Chinese rebar imports spark EU probe

 

The European Commission has opened an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese imports of steel rebar. The investigation will look at the flood of imports of high fatigue performance rebar, which is coming into the UK at below market prices. Imports now account for half of the total steel used in construction and are undermining domestic steel manufacturing.

Balfour Beatty signs up to Charter for British Sustainable Steel

 

Balfour Beatty became the first construction company to sign the Charter for British Sustainable Steel. As the UK's largest construction company, this is a very positive step for the campaign. Balfour Beatty joins eight local authorities on the list of signatories. 

Corby Council says 'Yes!' to Charter

 

The authority is one of the first signatories of the Charter for British Sustainable Steel, an initiative that has been set up by trade body UK Steel to promote domestically produced steel that has been manufactured in a safe, responsible and environmentally-friendly way and supports local sourcing and supply chains.

Manchester City Council signs up to Charter for British Sustainable Steel

 

We’re delighted to announce that Manchester City has committed to signing the Charter and will only procure BES 6001 accredited carbon steel rebar. Manchester City Council joins a growing list of local authorities that are supporting this vital British Industry. Other signatories include; Redcar and Cleveland, Rotherham, Corby, and North Lincolnshire.

Secretary of State for Wales welcomes Charter on behalf of UK Government

 

Stephen Crabb, Secretary of State for Wales, has welcomed the Charter for Sustainable British Steel. On 13th January 2015 he said:

 

“The UK Government supports the efforts of the rebar industry to demonstrate the quality and sustainability of its product. We welcome the voluntary charter.”

Following a day of canvassing to Welsh Assembly Members, we are pleased to announce a positive response to the Charter. Julie Morgan AM (Labour, Cardiff North) became the first Assembly Member to support the campaign and the British steel industry.

Cross-party MPs endorse Charter for Sustainable British Steel

 

The Charter for Sustainable British Steel has recieved cross-party support from MPs including; Jonathan Edwards MP (Plaid Cymru, Carmarthen), Ian Swales MP (Liberal Democrat, Redcar), Nic Dakin MP (Labour, Scunthorpe), Sarah Champion MP (Labour, Rotherham), Dr Hywel Francis (Labour, Averon) and Andrew Percy MP (Conservative, Brigg and Goole).
